The DML Cartel: News

DML CARTEL NEWSLETTER FOR FEB 6, 2008 - February 8, 2008

THANK YOU

I want you all to know how much we appreciate your continuous support. We have a lot of fun making music and playing shows but the fact that you come out and have a great time with us makes a big difference.

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Krewe of Aquarius show. They are already trying to book us for two shows next year. It is always an honor to play during Mardi Gras and to see everyone getting into what we do. A lot of folks braved the nasty weather to come and see us play.

Unfortunately, we didn't break the 2000 person mark that was expected, but there was still over 1000 people there and it was by far a fantastic party.

FITZGERALD'S ON FEBRUARY 17, 2008

John Rinkus, guitarist extraordinaire, has been laying down tracks at Big Door Studios for what will become his first solo CD. As it stands, there isn't a definite release date, but I've heard some of the raw tracks and I can already tell this CD is going to be huge. John has asked if I would help with some lyrics and vocals. Naturally I accepted.

In the process of looking for musicians to work with in the studio, John has hooked up with bass player, Mark Head, and drummer, Richard Magallanes, both of whom have done work with me in the studio for "Word Of Mouth".

Since Bare Necessity has been taking some time off, I have been rehearsing with John, Mark, & Richard. We rehearsed for about a week when the idea to do a live show came up.

About the same time, I got a call from Lindsay, with Gorilla Productions, to play in their Battle of the Bands at Fitzgeralds.

So we started rehearsing some DML songs and we put together a 40 minute set to play. It sounds great. It has a good feel and I'm looking forward to rocking out at Fitzgeralds.

So if you are availabe Sunday, February 17, come out to Fitzgeralds and cheer us on. We'll be video taping the show as well, so you might see yourself in a future video.

The band will go on some time around 5:00PM and tickets are $8.00 pre-sale or $10.00 at the door.

FOR ALL FIREFOX USERS

It has come to my attention that people using Firefox to access the internet were having difficulties viewing the DML cartel website & newsletter.

In fact, I recieved quite a few emails saying that the links and photos were not coming up properly. So Derek did some investigating and discovered that there was definitely something going on.

Since I use Internet Explorer to access the web, it didn't appear to have any problems accessing the site. It was my good friend, Aaron Geis, who figured it out and told me what to fix.

So, thanks to everyone who sent an email to let me know something was wrong. And thanks to Aaron for the great advice. I would have probably never caught it on my own.

I appreciate the fact that you are checking out the website and giving me your feedback. I am always tweaking the site to make it better and to keep everything current. Any and all recommendations are
welcomed.

~~~~~~~
PARTY WITH THE KREWE OF AQUARIUS
Mardi Gras is right around the corner and Bare Necessity will be right in the middle of it.
Get out your gaudiest attire and best beads and plan to attend the Krewe of Aquarius Barn Bash on Friday, January 25th.
This is one of THE biggest Mardi Gras parties and the most fun you will find on Galveston island. The band will be taking the stage at 7:00pm and it will be a Rock & Roll marathon until 11:00pm.
There is $15.00 cover charge at the door, but that includes beer, set-ups (for BYOB), food and a chance to win a free spot on one of the Krewe of Aquarius floats. Krewe members will also be throwing beads from their floats and there will be specialty beads and T-shirts for sale.
To get to the Krewe of Aquarius Barn Bash, go south on I-45 and cross the Causeway Bridge onto Galveston Island. I-45 turns into Broadway once you are on the Island. Go approximately 2 miles to 31st Street and turn right. Go .3 miles and you will see the Holy Rosary Catholic Church on the left and the Krewe of Aquarius Barn (the old Dr. Pepper Bottling Plant) is down the street on the right. Park in the neighborhood wherever you can find a space. Please be mindful of residential driveways.
We've been asked about ticket pre-sales. Here is what we found out.
Tickets are available at the door ONLY, they don't pre-sell tickets. They have ticket pre-sales for their members only, but they assure us there's never been a problem in the past as to how many tickets they sell or of ever running out.
MESSAGE FROM DEREK
2007 Wrap-Up
What a year it was in 2007! As I type this, I'm sitting in a hotel room in Washington DC, a stone's throw away from very important government people, but I have promised myself that I won't actually throw stones at anybody.
The NFL football season has ended for us and the Houston Texans. The honor of being allowed to play at the games this season is something that we do not take lightly, and we have YOU to thank for that. The selection of the bands is done by online voting from the general public, and to be the final band in the standings is something that we will remember forever, though we are definitely wanting to go back and do it again, so keep those voting fingers ready for 2008! (Is is a coincidence that they had their best season yet in franchise history? I don't think so...)
As a spinoff from the Texans gig, we were invited to play on the Great Day Houston program. The experience was a lot of fun, we got to meet some great people while we were there, and we learned A LOT about the inside workings of local televisions stations. We got to play DML Cartel material while we were there, and we're hoping to go back at some point and do it again.
Speaking of DML Cartel...
We did finally release the Word Of Mouth CD, after quite a lot of studio time and promises that "it'll be out soon!" After a lot of hard work we finally got it ready to send to the manufacturer, and with the help of several EXTREMELY generous sponsors we were able to get the production completed ahead of schedule and out in time for Christmas gifts. The reponse has been positive, and it is something that we are very proud of. The CD represents the culmination of months (years?) of hard work and the successful completion of one of our big achievement goals. We are already looking towards the next one, there are a few songs that are partially completed and waiting for a return to the studio, as well as new ideas that we are coming up with along the way, so who knows what the future holds?
The short term future is lots easier to predict. Bare Necessity will be doing the third party in a row for the Krewe of Aquarius in Galveston, TX to kick off the Mardi Gras season on January 25th... I think that's the date, it's a Friday, check your calendar. Long as you're checking, mark that date as something you can't miss! There are a few surprises planned, and we are expecting well over 1,000 people so hurry to get your tickets, it's the kind of night that if you hear about it after you miss it, you'll be regretting it for the rest of your days on the planet, so DON"T MISS OUT! We've also got something scheduled for Yaga's in Galveston in late March, watch for updates on that. There is another trip out to the Galveston County Rodeo for the cookoff tent party also in the works. That's a private event hosted by the cooking team, if you would like to help contribute towards the costs that they incur (and it's not a tiny expense on their part!) and get a few invitations in the process, I'm sure Becky can help you out on that one. Well, that's about all I can think of right now... 2007 was a bit of a blur with all the activity, here's to 2008! Let's see what's in store.
THE DML CARTEL NEWSLETTER FOR 1/16/08 - January 16, 2008
Hey Music Lover,
Just so you know, I read all of the emails that come to the band and I am always looking for new & improved ways to promote our music and get our name out to the general public. Some of the suggestions that I have received are very good.
So you may notice some changes or adjustments in the way I approach the upcoming newsletters.
If you'd like to know what's going on with the band, you can always check for updates at http://www.dmlcartel.com/newsletter. I try and update that site on a regular basis.
UNSIGNED MUSICIANS
Deb from Unsigned Musicians sent me an email on myspace requesting some DML songs for their show.
Hopefully, "Happy Ever After", "Temptation", "Pocket Full Of Reasons", "Best Of Monday Night", & "Bona Fide Superstar" will make an appearance on upcoming shows.
Unsigned Musicians is a new internet radio program that has been created to feature original songs from unsigned musicians who are not getting the recognition they deserve.
You can enjoy the show live every Saturday night! The hosts invite you to join them in their chat room while you listen to the LIVE show.
Just go to the link pasted below - the chat room will appear on the bottom of the page shortly after the show starts.
The site also has links that allow you to listen to archived shows at any time.
GW BASSES
We have been in contact with Grandon Westlund about a possible sponsorship/endorsement deal with GW Basses.
GW Basses is based in West Lafayette, Indiana, and is owned and operated by the "Bass Kahuna" himself.
Grandon is a long time friend and a personal favorite, as far as musicians go. We have been in several music projects together over the years, and has contributed his bass talents on my first two solo CD's, "Whatever Happened To You" & "Sophomore Jinx".
As of late, Grandon has introduced his original designs of fine-crafted, quality basses to the music world at large.
We are hoping to finalize the details of this endorsement deal within the coming weeks.
For more information about his product line, check out his website.
~~~~~

ASK THE BAND A QUESTION

Here are some answered questions.

Q & A
Meagan in Florida asks

WHY WASN'T JOHN IN THE HAPPY EVER AFTER VIDEO?

We were looking for a place to shoot our video for "You Belong". We knew that we had a show coming up at Jernigan's, so we decided to try and do it there.

Unfortunately, it was a Bare Necessity cover show and John is not part of Bare Necessity.

We had planned to film the video before the actual show, so we thought maybe we could get John to come out and do the video with us, but he couldn't make the date.

We were going to try and find a way to add John into the video later but we never really got the footage that we were after.

While we were warming up, we played through a few songs in our set.
"Happy Ever After" being one of them.

Since we were unable to make the video for "You Belong", I just put together some live footage of the practice set. It was all I had to use.

We may reshoot an actual video for "Happy Ever After" with all the members later. I just wanted to play around with the video software.

WILL YOU BE COMING BACK TO FLORIDA ANYTIME SOON?

I had such a great time on my last trip to Florida that it is so easy to say YES.

My last time there I played in Pensacola & Panama City, but I was playing solo acoustic shows. That's not as much fun as rocking out with the cartel.

Next time, I will have the band with me and we will rock Florida to its foundation.

Floridians totally rock. I'm hoping to be back in Florida by late Spring.

~~~
Q & A
Jaime in Texas City asks
HOW LONG HAS THE DML CARTEL BEEN TOGETHER?
Before we introduced ourselves as The DML Cartel, Fred (bass), Derek
(guitar), Brooks (drums), & myself were playing in a cover band called Bare Necessity.
The core members of Bare Necessity have been together for about 5+ years now. I joined the band in September of 2004. So technically, this version of the band has been together for a little over 3 years.
I had been working with John (guitar) in the studio on the new CD since about October of 2006. I believe that John started playing with the band during the summer of 2007.
WILL YOU BE MAKING A VIDEO FOR YOU BELONG?
I sure hope so. "You Belong" is one of my favorite songs about one of
my favorite people. LOL.
THE DML CARTEL NEWSLETTER FOR 1/09/08. - January 9, 2008
Hey Music Lovers,
Hope everyone had a fantastic holiday season. Here's to another great year.
LOOKING FOR THE HOOKUP
In 2007, Bare Necessity accomplished great things as a cover band, but we also introduced another side of ourselves with The DML Cartel.
We are really excited that our original music has been so well received. Although we will still be performing shows as Bare Necessity, we are looking forward to doing more original shows.
We are looking for bands that might be interested in hooking up and doing some shows with us.
If you are in a band, or know someone that is, please contact us about putting a show together. As they say, there is strength in numbers. We might be able to put together our own events that will blow people away. Remember, Lollapalooza started out as an idea. Look what happened there.
So get in touch and lets make something happen.
~~~~~~

HOME SWEET HOME

The Hastings Music store in Galveston is now stocking our CD, "Word Of Mouth", in their rock/pop section.

Since our humble beginnings pretty muc centered on the island, it seemed only fitting that we get our CD's in their Galveston store first.

We have been working on getting our CD's in the other Hastings music stores around the state.

You'll get the scoop here first.

~~~~~~
ASK THE BAND A QUESTION
I've been getting a ton of questions about the future direction of the band and inquiries about its members.
I will be answering some of the questions that I've already received, but here is an open invitation to anyone that might be curious about the band.
So ask away.
~~~~~~

SHARING THE LOVE

We are looking for a few good men and women to share the love and let people know there are some new songs to push!

We would like to hear from you if your interested in working with us to introduce The DML Cartel to the world.

There will be some free swag for your assistance in the matter.

Download the new songs!
Get the new CD

~~~~~~
NEW RADIO STATIONS ADDED
This week, CD's and press kits have been sent to KAMX, KGSR, KROX, KLBJ, & KUT Radio in Austin.
I've been told by several folks that our music would go over very well in Austin and the couple of times that I've played there have become great memories.
If you live in or around the Austin area, please email these stations and request The DML Cartel.
Austin is well known for supporting Texas artists, so I'm hoping that they'll give us a fighting chance.
~~~~~~

DOWNLOAD US ON ITUNES

Thanks to the technilogical advances of today, all DML music is now available for download on iTunes. If you are more prone to download music rather than purchase a CD, our entire collection is download ready.

You can purchase individual songs or an entire CD.

For more info, go to www.dmlcartel.com/store.

~~~~~~
FREE CD CONTEST FOR 2008
We're giving away 2 free CD's! Here are the two contests, I'm eager to see what you all come up with.
1. Design a t-shirt for the band! Email your designs to me at d_lede@yahoo.com. I really want to see your creativity! Keep in mind we're poor, so the less number of colors you use, the cheaper it'll be for us to print them, which is definitely a good thing.
2. If you have no design skills, you still have a shot! What I want YOU to do is upload one of our songs to your myspace profile, add us to your top friends list (use the e-mail address "dlede@houston.rr.com" to find us), and get our music out to AS MANY PEOPLE AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE!
We want you to be creative in doing this, you can do anything from passing out flyers, requesting DML music on your local radio stations, or calling your local record stores to see if they are stocking DML music.
It is wide open to your personal creativity, just make sure it's not illegal! Once you've added us to your top friends list and you have one of our songs on your page, message me with the subject line "contest entry" and let me know how you've promoted! The most creative wins!
Both contests will end at midnight on Thursday, January 31st. I'm really excited about this, and hopefully you will be too! So get started already! I love you all.
STARTING OFF WITH A BANG - DATE CORRECTION
Our first show of the new year is going to be a major party.
Mardi Gras starts in January this year and we will be playing one of the biggest party's in Galveston.
The Krewe of Aquarius party is (FRIDAY) January 25, 2008 and is said to be even bigger than last years party (which we will never forget).
Last year there was 1500 people in attendance. This year they are expecting upwards of 2,000 people at the KOA Mardi Gras Party.
IN THE MEANTIME
Since we are slowing down our schedule a little to spend more time with family and friends this season, I just wanted to send out a reminder that our cd's are available online.
You can purchase a copy of "Word of Mouth" at CD baby. The link is http://cdbaby.com/cd/dmlcartel.
My first cd, "Whatever Happened To You" is still available while supplies last. You can pick up a copy at CD Baby at http://cdbaby.com/cd/dmlede.
And the collection wouldn't be complete without "Sophomore Jinx". CD Baby has them in stock at http://cdbaby.com/cd/dmlede2.
For more details on how to get a copy, go to www.dmlcartel.com/store.
LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS
The Texas Top 40 has added Happy Ever After & St Talisa into their rotation. Both are available as free downloads.
Each time that they are downloaded, it moves us up the charts. So please feel free to generously download the song as many times as you'd like and let your friends know to do the same.
You can download once a day or once within a 24 hour period.
